Story behind the song, "Still Drunk at Sober"

We were returning home early one morning from a gig the night before. It was a Sunday, and we noticed many erratic crazy drivers on the roads. I rhetorically asked Linda, "What is up with all these crazy ass drivers?" She replied, "They're still drunk at sunrise." I said, "That's a song!" I began thinking about all the drinking till your drunk, masking the pain songs out there, and then I thought, "What about a sober person? How do they cope without taking a drink?" So, the title changed to "Still Drunk at Sober."

I wrote this song about a man who has been sober since age 29 after being arrested by the police. He had a woman he loved with a family. But, suddenly she left them (It is not known how or why she left). Now he is back in Memphis, drunk and masking the pain he is in without ever taking a drink. The feeling of being drunk and in pain is still there for him although he never actually takes a drink. Hence, he declares he is Still Drunk at Sober. It is a song about the pain of loss. It is a song about coping with that pain and recognizing one's feelings about the loss.

Lyrics

I’m thirty-five, I stopped drinking at age 29
When that cop had me walk the line
It’s been years since whiskey numbed my brain
Clean and sober and never the same
You’ve been my warmth in a life filled with cold
A woman with an angels heart
And now that you left us, my heart is back in Memphis
Drunk and masking the hell

And now that it’s over I really know it’s over, I’m still drunk at sober without taking a drink
Don’t need whiskey to kill me, my heart lets me know when I sink
And now that it’s over I really know it’s over, I’m still drunk at sober without taking a drink
And now that it’s over I really know it’s over, I’m still drunk at sober without taking a drink
Don’t need whiskey to kill me, my heart lets me know when I sink

And now that it’s over I really know it’s over, I’m still drunk at sober without taking a drink
Don’t need whiskey to kill me, my heart lets me know when I sink
Don’t need whiskey to kill me, my heart lets me know when I sink
